JEFF BLITZ,
POLITICAL PROSECUTOR

In a plain and simple way, I must say that Jeff Blitz is nothing more than a "Political Prosecutor." It is truly unfortunate for our county that he has been permitted to serve in his office for nearly 20 years.

On April 8, 2005, Jeff Blitz released to The Press of Atlantic City that he had presented the President of Local 54 union, Bob McDevitt and two other labor leaders on indictable contempt charges before a criminal Grand Jury.

This all stems from a peaceful job action which occurred in Atlantic City on October 16, 2004, relating to a breakdown in the contract negotiations process between the union and management.

For the record, I do not believe that Jeff Blitz has any previous documented history of releasing secret Grand Jury hearing information regarding any other individual(s), who are eventually not indicted. There are good reasons not to release certain information, particularly when they are in the form of specious charges and the questionable motives of Blitz, as they relate to the leader of Local 54, who happens to be an ardent supporter of Atlantic City Mayor, Lorenzo Langford.

Interestingly enough, Blitz's actions come just a few weeks before an important Democrat Primary Election for Mayor in Atlantic City, and right after McDevitt had personally endorsed Mayor Langford for re-election.

Is it unreasonable to believe that Blitz wanted McDevitt to be in a cloud, under indictment for his politically trumped up charges in order to keep him "busy" through the election? Might an "indicted" man be perceived as "damaged goods" and thus his endorsement of Langford be rendered not only meaningless, but actually be portrayed as a liability to Langford?

Blitz's comment on the record from The Press read as follows: "We presented it, (the case against McDevitt), on Thursday. Grand Jurors chose not to indict. I do not intend to re-present the case."

I should note, that my brother is in the media and received no such release from Jeff Blitz with regard to his political hit on Bob McDevitt. Why does Blitz only communicate through The Press of Atlantic City?

This is a smart move by Blitz not to pursue this foolishness any further. It was gratifying to see that a group of wise and thoughtful citizens (Jurors) made the right decision. They were able to see through this political scheme and ruled against the wishes of this career Political Prosecutor Blitz.

It is difficult to imagine, with massive voter fraud being determined by a Superior Court Judge involving elections in the city of Atlantic City, that Blitz would burden the judicial system with this cheap shot at Bob McDevitt. Does Blitz truly not have better things to prosecute? And, if he has time to persecute McDevitt, why doesn't he go after the real criminals?

I believe it is apparent that this action by Blitz, against Bob McDevitt, is political punishment for McDevitt's support of Mayor Lorenzo Langford.

Can it be determined any other way, than that Jeff Blitz is playing politics with the system of justice in Atlantic County?

Now, I urge you to please read on, and I will support my assertion with a clear example of how Jeff Blitz handles issues of supposed civil disobedience, when he so desires.

I must take you back to September 3, 1990, when myself and my partner, Officer William Pollock (one of the finest ACPD has ever had), were detailed to a protest demonstration in the area of the Atlantic City Expressway.

The Reverend Al Sharpton was leading a march for a group that were then termed "The Forgotten Youth of Atlantic City." Reverend Sharpton chose the Labor Day Holiday in Atlantic City to stage his protest and obtain the most bang for his media buck.

Sharpton led a march down Baltic Avenue, with the intent to culminate his event by blocking the Atlantic City Expressway from Arkansas, Baltic and Mediterranean Avenues. Sharpton's effort was to essentially create complete gridlock upon the entire city on the busiest single day of the year. Please read on about what happened along the way.

Sharpton marched with hundreds of protesters until reaching the location of Mediterranean Avenue, where myself and Officer Pollock and countless other Officers were situated in full riot gear. Hundreds of other people had now also gathered near and around the Pitney Village housing development in support of Sharpton.

It was at this point that we were pelted with eggs, rocks, bottles and any other movable objects that could be thrown at us, by the huge group of people, who began to move toward us.

We had already drawn a line in the sand, where if it were encroached upon, to fully gridlock the city, we would make arrests.

Sharpton intentionally pursued an arrest by us at this time, when he persisted in moving his way through this area which had been secured by the police.  Sharpton was placed under arrest and put in handcuffs by myself and Officer Pollock.

We continued to dodge eggs, rocks, bottles and other objects being hurled at us by the angry mob, which continued to mount in support of Sharpton's actions, as we made our way with him to a radio car in order to transport Sharpton to a police holding area.

Simply put, Al Sharpton made his point. He had himself placed in handcuffs for a photo opportunity in the World's Famous Playground, and went on to never remember "The Forgotten Youth of Atlantic City" again.

But how many people were placed in harms way by Sharpton's actions? How many people could have been seriously injured by this Labor Day stunt? Was this a "peaceful Action," such as the one that Jeff Blitz tried to politically prosecute Bob McDevitt for?

Now I will get to how Blitz handled and prosecuted the case of the Reverend Al Sharpton, who placed many of us in harms way on that Labor Day of 1990.

On October 16, 1990, Jeff Blitz dismissed all charges for inciting-to riot, which had been filed by the Atlantic City Police resulting from the violence which took place on Labor Day 1990.

Blitz did this by insuring that the two arresting officers, (myself and Officer Pollock), were never called to give testimony in any hearing involving this matter. As the two who really witnessed the event and had actually apprehended Al Sharpton, we were continually excluded from all hearings relating to the case. (A fact that still astounds me to this day.)

Blitz's only comment for the public appeared in The Press: "Justice requires that people be charged with what they did," said Blitz of his determination that (Sharpton) did not deserve to be charged with causing a riot, which is an indictable offense.

I have outlined the shear level of the violence that was caused on Sept 3, 1990, in an action that was led by Al Sharpton. If he did not deserve to be charged with inciting the riot that was caused, as Jeff Blitz determined, than who should have been charged?

And, if Sharpton's actions did not rise to the level of an indictable crime according to Blitz, than how could Bob McDevitt's peaceful job action with Local 54, (where no violence what-so ever, or threats of violence had even occurred), have reasonably caused Blitz to present McDevitt before a Grand Jury?

By performing political stunts, such as this latest upon Bob McDevitt, Blitz has managed to continually be reappointed to his position as County Prosecutor. Blitz's actions are reflective of someone who's time has come and gone.

I agree with my brother Harry, of Hurley in the Morning fame:  "It is time for Jeff Blitz to go!"

I will conclude by challenging this career political prosecutor, Blitz, to stop prosecuting innocent law-abiding, good citizens, especially in view of the fact that he has no true courage to prosecute the real criminals in this area.

How do you sleep at night, Blitz?

EDITOR & PUBLISHER HARRY HURLEY NOTE:

I am extremely proud of Don for setting the record straight about Jeff Blitz. Blitz is out of control and Don has put unambiguous facts together, which demonstrate The Jeff Blitz political prosecutor agenda in Atlantic County.

I am very confidant that Blitz will never again be appointed by any future Governor of New Jersey to this supreme position of public trust.

This is as it should be.

Again, my congratulations to my Brother Don for his outstanding article, which really hits the nail on the head in terms of exposing Jeff Blitz and his selective prosecutorial ways.
