What They're Saying:

John Kerry's Pessimism And Misery Tour

"Senator Kerry is indeed on a misery and pessimism tour. If you were doing comic strips you would have the dark cloud above his head, constantly raining.  If the morning has a little bit of fog, he'll say fog is descending on America.  If the sun is out he'll say that we're going to get overly sunburned. If it rains, he'll say there are floods coming; if it doesn't rain, he'll predict drought.  And the fact of the matter is, in terms of the American economy right now it's in a very strong position, and while we want an economy where everyone who wants a job can get a job, I think we have to look at the fact that enormous progress has been made after the Clinton-Gore bubble of the late 1990s."

-Steve Forbes

"The President's economic policies have provided historic tax relief to Americans and encouraged the fastest economic growth in twenty years, but John Kerry has created a 'misery index' that views Jimmy Carter's high interest rates and out of control inflation as a role model.  Kerry's 'misery index' provides another reminder of the clear choice Americans face in November."

-Rep. Bill Thomas (R-CA)

"Only John Kerry could remain pessimistic about an economy that has produced 1.4 million new jobs in the past nine months.  Kerry's scare tactics and 'Great Depression' rhetoric continue to ring hollow in the face of an economy that is strong and getting stronger.  Companies across America are hiring more people at a faster pace, and economists predict that this boom is not just temporary. The President's pro-growth policies are continuing to create jobs and keep America competitive."

-Rep. David Dreier (R-CA)

"President Bush's pro-growth policies have helped create more than 1.1 million jobs this year, and two-thirds of these jobs are in industries that pay more than the national average. John Kerry's economic pessimism ignores the fact that employers are hiring more Americans and paying them higher wages.  I know it is in John Kerry's political interests to badmouth the economy and compare it to the Great Depression, but the truth is we are experiencing the fastest economic growth in 20 years and thousands of new jobs are being created every month. Americans won't be fooled by his negative political rhetoric."

-Rep. Rob Portman (R-OH)

"America's economic growth over the past twelve months is the fastest in almost 20 years. Unemployment is at 5.6 percent, the same figure as during Clinton's 1996 re-election campaign. Voters realize that the Democrat double standard for the economy is at odds with reality."

-Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA)

"My message to Senator Kerry is this, since you have been away from the Senate, missing hundreds of important votes, the economy has taken off and hundreds of thousands of new jobs have been created.  While you have been campaigning, America has gone back to work.  Maybe you should too."

-Rep. Candice Miller (R-MI)

"Senator Kerry's pessimism and economic isolationism can't change the reality that the recovery in output and employment is strong.  The past four quarters of economic growth are the strongest in 20 years.  Factory orders are now 12.5 percent higher than this time last year, and manufacturing employment has turned the corner.  The Senator's depiction of the economy is out of touch with the reality on the ground, and his proposals of tax increases on small businesses and new spending wouldn't give the recovery hope going forward."

-R. Glenn Hubbard, Columbia University Professor and Former Chairman of the President's Council of Economic Advisers

"With more than 1.4 million jobs created over the past nine months, Democrats can no longer call our economic recovery jobless.  Higher wages and more jobs are the result of President Bush's pro-growth policies, not John Kerry's economic pessimism."

-Marc Summerlin, Managing Director, The Lindsey Group, former Deputy Director of the National Economic Council
